Teach your Dog to Say I Love You

Have you ever seen those videos of dogs who are able to bark out phrases like "Rye Ruv Roo" in that characteristic Scooby Doo voice? Have you ever wondered how those people taught their dog a trick like that?
I was wondering the same thing, and decided—partly by accident—to see if I could get my dog Mukha to learn a few words!

Mukha, like many dogs, has the instinctual tendency to howl at ambulance or police sirens as they drive by, and I've never been one to get annoyed by this. In fact, I quite like to watch her yell out to what must, in her mind, be some lonely dog in the distance. On more than a few occasions, I've even howled along with her, which really prolongs the whole experience—much to my neighbor's delight!
After several of these performances, I noticed that she would often mimic the pitch of my voice. If I let out a low, quiet howl, then she would follow suit with a half-hearted baritone moan! She even started to copy my mouth movements, which is when I really thought it might be possible to squeeze a word or two out of those melodies!

1) The Afghan Hound is a breed from the slighthound dog breed. It usually has a fine, silky coat and its tail with a ring curl at the end, the breed acquired its unique features in the cold mountains of Afghanistan, where it was originally used to hunt hares, and gazelles by coursing them.

2) The Airedale Terrier (often shortened to “Airedale”) is a breed of the terrier type, originating in Airedale, a geographic area in Yorkshire, England. It traditionally was called the “King of Terriers” because before the creation of the Black Russian Terrier by the NKVD, the Airedale was largest of the terrier breeds. The breed has also been called the Waterside Terrier, because it was bred originally to hunt otters in and around the valleys of the River Aire which runs through Airedale. In England this breed has also been used as a police dog.

3) The American Akita often called simply Akita; is a dog breed from the mountainous northern regions of Japan. The American Akita is considered a separate breed from the Akita Inu (Japanese Akita) in many countries around the world, with the notable exceptions of the United States and Canada. In the US and Canada, both the American Akita and the Akita Inu are considered a single breed with differences in type rather than two separate breeds. Note that in 2005 the FCI-designation Great Japanese Dog was officially changed to American Akita.

4) The Alaskan Malamute is a generally large breed of domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris) originally bred for use as an Alaskan sled dog. It is sometimes mistaken for a Siberian Husky, but in fact is quite different in many ways.

In the United States, the breed is usually referred to as the Cocker Spaniel, while in Canada and elsewhere in the world, it is called the American Cocker Spaniel. The word cocker is commonly held to stem from their use to hunt woodcock in England. Although the Cocker Spaniel type originated in the United Kingdom, by the 1940s the American breed was recognized as distinct from the English breed.

Dog food

Dog food refers to food specifically intended for consumption by dogs. Technically carnivorous, dogs have sharp, pointy teeth, and have short gastrointestinal tracts better suited for the consumption of meat. In spite of this natural carnivorous design, dogs have still managed to evolve over thousands of years to survive on the meat and non-meat scraps and leftovers of human existence and thrive on a variety of foods. In the United States alone, dog owners spent over $8.5 billion on commercially manufactured dog food in 2007. Some people make their own dog food, feed their dogs meals made from ingredients purchased in grocery or health-food stores or give their dogs a raw food diet.

Dog toilet training

House training (toilet training) a puppy or a dog takes time and patience and, just as with children, every puppy or dog is different and will learn at its own pace.
To make the process of toilet training successful and as efficient as possible, you need to use positive reinforcement training. The first step is to give your dog plenty of opportunities to go outside. The second is to reward the dog every time(or as often as possible) it eliminates in the place where you want the dog to go.
The reward must occur immediately after the event (within a few seconds), not when the dog comes back inside, as the dog will not make an association between the elimination and the reward unless it is given straight afterwards. The reward can be in the form of praise (a pat on the chest or saying 'good' dog in a pleasant tone of voice), offering a food treat or giving the dog their favourite chew toy.

This system relies on you supervising the dog as much as possible throughout the day so as not to miss the opportunity to reward the dog for the good behaviour. The more often you can do this, the faster the dog will learn. You should also look out for signs showing the dog is about to go to the toilet so you can take them outside and are ready to praise them as soon as they have finished. When dogs are about to go to the toilet they tend to sniff the area, circle and then pause in the spot (though individuals may vary so owners may watch their dog to get an idea of what they do).
Remember to take your puppy or dog to the toilet area first thing in the morning, as dogs will often need to go to the toilet at this time.
Positive reinforcement also involves ignoring 'unwanted' elimination – i.e. if the dog goes in the wrong place it is best to display no reaction. You should clean the area thoroughly with a non-ammonia based cleaning product (these can be found at your local veterinary clinic or animal supplies store) to take away the scent and reduce the likelihood of the dog using the same place again next time.
Old-fashioned responses such as 'rubbing the dog’s nose in it' or administering any form of punishment will not teach the dog anything, in fact it may actually delay the learning process. The dog may instead learn that eliminating in front of the owner is inappropriate and this then makes rewarding elimination (when they do go in the right spot) difficult.
It is very important to note that young puppies often do not have full control over their urination until they are a bit older. That is, urination is a developmental process, so very young puppies can make a mistake without being able to prevent or control it.

Dog communication refers to body movements and sounds dogs use to send signals to other dogs, and other animals (usually humans). Dog communication comes in a variety of forms, and is part of the foundation of dog social behavior. Dogs use certain movements of their bodies and body parts and different vocalizations to express their emotions. There are a number of basic ways a dog can communicate its feelings. These are movements of the ears, eyes, eyebrows, mouth, nose, head, tail, and entire body, as well as barks, growls, whines and whimpers, and howls.

Dog licence

A dog licence (or dog license) is required in some jurisdictions to be the keeper of a dog. Usually a dog-licence identifying number is issued to the owner, along with a dog tag bearing the identifier and a contact number for the registering organization. If a stray pet is found with the tag, a rescuer can call the registering organization to get current contact information for the dog's owner.Licensing a dog might require additional actions on the owner's part, such as ensuring that the dog has a current rabiesvaccination.
